Choosing the right window coverings

As with most home styling decisions there is function, style and budget to consider.

Allow time to tour each room and window – and ask yourself “what problem do I need the window covering to solve here?”

The most common issues to consider are;

Privacy – day or night or both?

Heat – out in summer and retained in winter?

Light – blocked out at night for sleeping or is more required into a dark building?

View – retain a great view or hide an ugly one?

Glare – reduction in living or working spaces?

Access – ease of operation? Consider automating some high or inaccessible blinds.

Ventilation – do you want a window covering and the breeze?

Security – Lock at night and leave the window open?

The street elevation is the most important to get right as we arrive home we want a welcoming look to our homes. For most people consistency and symmetry is desirable.

Plantation shutters are currently the most desired for look as much as versatility.

Roller blinds are great for a more minimalist and streamlined look, fabric now come in a vast range of textures and colours providing either a neutral back drop or a bolder statement. It is possible to pick a glamorous curtain fabric and make into either roller or roman blinds.

Roman blinds are a more sophisticated look than roller blinds and are great for dressing formal rooms and master bedroom suites.

Plantation Shutters are the most expensive internal window covering, but easily the most versatile. Explore the options available – there is a lot more choice than the traditional Western Red Cedar. Consider using at the front of the house only if the budget is getting stretched

Adding automation to blinds can make them fairly expensive too

Good quality roman blinds and venetians are a similar price

Chain drive rollers are the least expensive contempory covering available.

Vertical and slimline venetians remain the most budget conscious option – but there’s always the old sheet experience!!
