Plantation Shutters have traditionally been an expensive window covering crafted from Western Red Cedar. Mass produced imported shutters have made the product accessible for many more homes. At this stage the consistency of quality for many products from China is not hitting the levels achieved by the developed world’s manufacturers. Classic Blind’s Aluminium Plantation Shutter is manufactured in Newcastle to high consistent standards at a price that is affordable for most customers. These shutters are hugely popular, and well deserved as they are one of the most versatile and low maintenance window coverings available.

We still make the traditional Western Red Cedar plantation shutters as they are regarded to be the Rolls Royce of timber shutters.

Manufactured at our factory in Macquarie Hills these screens offer the best the market has to give in corrosion and intruder resistance!

Invisi-Gard screens mesh is woven from Marine grade 316 high tensile stainless steel, pre treated and powder coated with the highest powder coating available – making it almost impossible to cut. Frames are manufactured from aluminium allowing a combination of strength and choice of colour – match to your home’s existing colorbond colours. Invisi-Gard employs a unique patented Pressure Retention and Isolation Method. The mesh is gripped in the frame using a rubberised device – thus preventing the two metals coming into contact with each and sparking corrosion. This grip also ensures that the mesh cannot “pop out” no matter the amount of pressure exerted.

Locally Manufactured Plantation Shutters

Sadly one of the very few other local manufacturer’s of plantation shutters in Newcastle has decided to shut up shop citing the competition from China as the cause of decline in his business.

A number of years ago we recognised the potential of Aluminium Plantation Shutters, consequently we designed and developed a system that we knew would a low cost to manufacture. We still manufacture Western Red Cedar Shutters, but in truth our business would not be able to survive on this product alone. We keep it on our range as a part of the market recognises WRC as the Rolls Royce of timber for window furnishings and it enables us to retain the skill levels within our factory. Aluminium Plantation Shuttershave proven to be a highly successful product, clients love their resilence, look and thermal properties, the fact that we can manufacture locally is an added bonus. Our lead times are much shorter, our quality of product and service higher than any of the imported or mass produced product.

We have just finished a number of jobs where we have used Aluminium Plantation Shutters to create Privacy screens.

The first images show how useful Shutters can be around a spa – leave the louvres open for airflow, tilt for privacy or close to keep the weather out. This client had a custom colour – one of the colorbond colour.

This client wanted some privacy for her front door from the road. We have used one of our standard colours for Aluminium Plantation Shutters Satin White and closed off the entire opening – yet giving our client the flexibility of allowing light and airflow into her porch area

Plantation Shutters and central control bars

I have recently noticed a lot of Plantation Shutters on TV – appearing in the background of many commercials and TV dramas. The majority seem to have the central control bar. A control bar is required as the method to open and close the louvres. Just about all of the plantation shutters we make here in Newcastle or supply would use a control bar to the side and rear of the panel or at the side and to the front. Most customers prefer this option as the panel has a cleaner look and there is less to obstruct the view.

As manufacturers we greatly dislike the central control bar, mainly because there is no satisfactory way to connect the bar to the louvres/blades. In this mass produced plantation shutter panel (see image) the control bar is connected by 2 looped staples and is clearly not a durable solution. I often see examples of a “loose” blade out of sync with the rest of the panel because the staples have fallen out.

Even the components available for a top end Western Red Cedar centre controls are not great. Small plastic elbow joints that are vulnerable to UV deterioration as the best the industry has to offer.

Avoid the problem – keep to controls to the side of panels, despite anything you may see on the TV!

Creating a feature wall using blinds

This is an interesting concept – using the colour and texture of a fabric blind to create a feature wall. I would think that we would have to secure the bottom of the blind in order to prevent any irratating sway?

The article also suggests using timber weave blinds – we use the Peter Meyer collection of timber weave materials for roman and panel glide blinds. They work particularly well as a panel glide room divider.

One of our hard working staff members has recently replaced her ageing vertical blinds with Classic Plantation Shutters at her home in Newcastle. Chris likes to leave her windows open at night for fresh air, and as she and her husband were over the rattle of the vertical blinds, Chris chose aluminium plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are one of the few window coverings that remain silent in a breezy window, the aluminium is robust enough to cope with any ingress of the elements. Chris has also commented on the improved quality of light that now comes into her house. The dull fabric of the verticals seemed to absorb light whilst the painted shutters provides a soft light bounce. We always knew Chris would be thrilled with her renovation, but husband Bruce is also very pleased!

We have used Aluminium Plantation shutters to provide a flexible privacy screen to each side of the deck. The louvres move to provide either a more weather protected space or increased ventilation.

This client has experienced intense glare and heat not only onto to her deck but also into the back of the house, external blinds have solved both problems and yet maintained the view into the garden. Sandi and Tony are delighted with the result of this project, and with the addition of an external gas heater they plan to host their family get togethers, all year round on their new living room deck.
